30-Day House Cleaning Challenge—Day #1

I am participating in Money Saving Mom’s 30-Day Housecleaning Challenge.  Each day in April, she posts a challenge for the day, then a follow-up that evening.  I will post my results and pictures here on my good ‘ole blog.  If you’d like to participate as well, visit Crystal’s blog here.

It is no secret that cleaning is not my favorite activity, yet I seem consumed by it.  It seems like there is always something in my house that needs to be cleaned, washed, dusted, put away, scrubbed, or organized.  It is exhausting.  I have never been on a cleaning schedule—I’ve always been somewhat of a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants cleaner.  So, I decided to participate in this cleaning challenge with the hopes of getting my rear in gear where my house-cleaning is concerned.

The challenge for day number one was to do some surface cleaning.  The assignment was to clean off the kitchen counters, wash any dishes, pick up anything in the living room that did not belong there, and to vacuum the floors.  I think I did pretty well, as most of these I do every day anyway.
I took it a step further by pulling everything on my kitchen counter and wiping underneath everything.  The crumbs under my toaster oven were a bit, um, abundant.
I should really clean under there more often.

The island is usually our catch-all spot.  There’s always mail, school papers, cell phones, cell phone chargers, keys—you name it, it’s probably on the island.  So, I put all of that clutter away or trashed it (well, I mostly just trashed it).  I moved all of the things that belong and wiped underneath everything.  I stuck those dishes that are in the sink into the dish washer.  The stuff you see in the picture are things that are always there; the fruit plate, my candle wax warmer, and drying baby bottles.  I know the bottles look clutter-ey, and there were some dishes drying next to them, but all of that was picked up after this picture was snapped.  This is actually a big improvement.

Ah, the living room.  I have to vacuum it nearly every day since we have shedding dogs and a almost-mobile baby.  So that was not even an issue.  The surface cleaning, well, I do what I can.  Because I have two other little boys who love their toys…and they love scattering it everywhere.  Just before I took this picture, there were no toys in the room.  I put everything away, cleaned off the junk mail from my foyer table, and dusted everything.  And the baby walker is always out, so I don’t include that as clutter.

Then I turned around, and there was a line of Hot Wheels and a lovey on the coffee table.  Oh, the Hot Wheels.  They haunt me wherever I go.  I’m either stepping on one, sleeping on one, find them hiding in my coffee cup—there are millions of them scattered everywhere.
Well, probably not millions.  But at least in the low 100’s…maybe.
Anyway, other than the cars, I got the living room pretty tidy.

Please excuse my lack of curtains.  Since moving here in August, I still have not figured out how I want to decorate in here.  I just put the furniture in here and that’s about it.  I have so many things to do in this house.  Hopefully I can update about my progress soon.
So there’s Day #1.  Hopefully Day #2 will prove to be pretty easy!

Are you participating in the challenge?  I'd love to hear about it!
