Make-Your-Own Taco Seasoning

Make-Your-Own Monday is a weekly series that challenges you to take something that you would normally purchase in the grocery store and make it yourself.  This challenge is about getting the processed ingredients out of your kitchen, making your home and family healthier, and saving money.

Several years ago, I had a serious revelation.  Each week, I noticed that I was including various seasoning packets on my grocery list.  I bought seasoning packets of every variety-- spaghetti, chili, meatloaf, pork roast, and every packet of gravy mix that you would find on the shelves.

After a while, I realized that most of the spices that flavor these packets are already in my pantry.  Why was I spending up to a dollar or more for these packets when I could just figure out my own recipe for these seasoning packets?  These packets take up space in the pantry, are pretty expensive, and are full of junky stuff that I really don't like putting in my food.

Of all the seasonings, taco seasoning is the one I purchased the most.  We eat a lot of Mexican food, and taco seasoning is almost always an ingredient in every re
cipe I make.  I have probably spent hundreds of dollars on taco seasoning over the last ten years.  Yikes!  Once I had this realization, I set out to make my own seasoning blends for all the different recipes I make.

This taco seasoning blend is so easy.  I always have the spices for this in my pantry- you probably have most of these as well.

Ingredients:
1 Tablespoon chili powder
1 Tablespoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper

Thoroughly combine the spices and add according to the recipe you are using.  This recipe equals one packet of taco seasoning.  I often make this in bulk and store it in glass jars in my pantry.  If you choose to do this, use about three tablespoons of the mix per recipe.
