Join Me in the 12 Months To A Healthier You Challenge!


It is a new year, and more than likely we have all resolved to lose weight and get healthy. Every year, I say I'm going to change my diet and increase my level of exercise. While my intentions were always good, it just never seemed to stick for me.


For one thing, I'm busy. Super busy. And I forget to put myself on my own schedule sometimes. As parents, we all know what it is like to put the needs of our families ahead of our own needs. I'm 100% guilty of that. I know I need to go out and walk. Sure, I need to lift those weights to build up some muscle and rev my metabolism. But darn it, there are only so many hours in the day.

This is the year it all changes. Enough is enough. I don't know how many years I have told myself that I was going to do something about the extra weight. 2014 will be the year that I finally do it.

I know I can do it. I've done it before. And I felt amazing when I lost the weight. But you know what? I got lazy. I got lax in my exercising. I took for granted all the hard work I did to lose the weight. And guess what? Sure, enough, that weight came right back.

So I've had it. this is it. I'm going to do it. No more fat summers for me. I want to go to the beach and not feel like I have to hide. I want to take my kids to the pool and not have to wear a t-shirt over my suit because I'm too embarrassed of my appearance. I am going to do this no matter how long it takes.

It is simply the matter (in my case, anyway) of getting into a routine. I have to make exercise a priority in my daily routine. Once you do things enough times, it becomes routine and easily fits into your schedule.

Regular readers of Money Saving Mom have read about her 12 Months To A Healthier You Challenge. I will be taking on this challenge. It's not like other challenges. This one will help keep me accountable all year long. It has a start and end date, and I like that. I don't feel left dangling with no end in site.

She has challenged herself and her readers to change one thing per month to improve their overall health. Here is the monthly breakdown:

The challenge for January is to exercise regularly. This, I think, will be the most difficult part of the challenge for me. Not because I dislike exercise. Because I feel like I have run out of time to exercise. But I have decided to make myself a priority and carve out an hour a day-give or take- to get some kind of exercise in.

My exercise consists of a lot of walking. We live in a gorgeous rural area with beautiful surroundings. It is such a shame to not be outside enjoying it. Many times I will strap my two youngest kids into the jogging stroller and walk for about 45 minutes. But what I really enjoy is walking after my husband gets home. I'll let him watch over the boys while I go for a quiet walk alone. That is such a treat. I really enjoy having some quiet time for myself. I truly think that type of peace is soul-healing.

Secondly, I have started lifting some weights. Not heavy, muscle-man weights. For Christmas, I told my husband I only wanted two things-a new pair of running shoes and a set of adjustable hand weights . He got the weights for me and told me to pick out the shoes I wanted. I love my shoes, but these weights are awesome! I highly suggest these. I am really enjoying them so far.

Third, I'm doing a thirty day arm challenge. I joined a weight loss group on Facebook to keep me accountable. We are completing the challenge together. So far so good!
