Make Your Own Carpet Freshener

If you have pets, then you can sympathize with me on this post.  We have a dog and a cat at home, both of which live both inside and outside.  As expected, I am always vacuuming my floors.  I can not stand having pet hair all over my house.  It makes me go crazy.  What is worse is when the dog gets stinky and brings that smell inside.  After giving him a good bath in homemade dog shampoo, I give my carpets a good once-over with the vacuum cleaner.

I used to spend money on carpet freshener.  I loved the smell and it really made my floors look nice.  Plus it got the pet smells out.  However, in my quest to become more frugal, I decided to give it up.  The type that I purchased costs over two dollars a bottle, and it never lasted me more than a couple of vacuum sessions.

However, I missed the smell of my clean carpets.  So I decided to wing it.  Using one of my old coffee creamer containers, I mixed up some baking soda with a few drops of essential oil from Puritan’s Pride.  I shook it up really well and sprinkled it all over the floors.  After it sat for a few minutes, I vaccumed it up.  Let me tell you, that worked just as well as my expensive carpet freshener I used to buy.  And there are no chemicals in it, which is a huge bonus for me.

To Make Your Own Homemade Carpet Freshener:

2 Cups of baking soda (I buy the huge bags of baking soda at Sam’s)
5-10 drops of essential oil– my favorites are lemon, pink grapefruit, and eucalyptus

Add the baking soda to a plastic container.  Drop the essential oil into the baking soda and shake it really well.

Simple as that!
