Cinnamon Sugar Donut Muffins

My kids love donuts. Heck, I love donuts too! But they certainly don’t love me. And they aren’t great for my already-entirely-too-active-to-need-additional-sugar children either. On my quest to find an alternative donut solution, I discovered this recipe for muffins that taste like donuts. I tried them out on my little guys, and they went nuts! Not that I will ever completely deprive them of the real thing, but I’m pretty sure that I will be substituting these muffins for our regular donut Saturday.

For the Muffins:

  • 1-¾ cup self-rising flour
  • ½ teaspoons nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoons cinnamon
  • ⅓ cups applesauce
  • ¾ cups sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ cup milk

For the Coating:

  • ¼ cups butter
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Sift together flour, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
Combine applesauce, sugar, egg and milk. Add dry ingredients and stir to combine.
Pour into muffin tins. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
For the coating, melt the butter in a bowl. Mix the white sugar and the cinnamon in another bowl.
While the muffins are still warm, dip the muffins in butter (one at a time), then into the sugar and cinnamon mixture. Let cool and enjoy!
